Living in 2013 its hard to peel your kids away from video games and other activities that involve sitting indoors, not getting out and enjoying nature. But the truth is that almost all kids love fishing. Its the excitement factor of not knowing what you have on the end of the line until you actually see it. Then there is the challenge factor. Its always possible to have the fish come off the line before you get it reeled all the way in. That just makes it that much more gratifying when you get to hold the fish and get that feeling of accomplishment.

Far and away I think the ingredient that gets kids to really love fishing is the competition of it. Almost every time groups of people go out fishing, it will involve some type of contest. Kids love to compete with each other. They will go to school on Monday morning, happily telling all the other kids about how big their fish was. There is just something about fishing in general that all kids really get into. There are of course adults that have fishing addictions too..

Where to take the Kids fishing

Almost every city it seems has a park or pond that is easily accessible to catch bluegill. Most even have nice docks and beaches where any  children who aren’t interested in fishing can enjoy themselves doing other activities. If you don’t have a boat, that’s not really a problem when fishing for bluegill. They are almost always available in plentiful supply right near the shoreline in shallow water. Sit back and relax and watch the smiles come over their faces as they reel in the fish.

Why is the Bluegill the best fish to teach kids fishing?

The bluegill is a feisty fish with an aggressive eating habit. They will eat anything from bread to exotic home made flies out of animal fur. The benefits of teaching a child to fish for bluegill are numerous. Here are just a few reasons why it is the number one fish to target when teaching kids to fish.

  • They will eat nearly anything that is edible. (worms work particularly good though)
  • They are one of, if not the most plentiful fish in the US
  • The fight extremely hard for their size, due to the shape of the bluegill.
  • They will be easy to catch in large quantities.  This should keep the children interested and entertained.
  • Bluegill are one of the most delicious fish to eat, and are very easy to clean.
  • The satisfaction children get from eating what they catch is immense.

Taking children bluegill fishing is a great way to get the whole family outside. It will certainly be one of those great days that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. I can still remember fishing as a kid for bluegill. Some of those days 30 plus years ago when I was only five or six, have proven to be memories that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Bluegill fishing is indeed one of the most fun places to take kids.
